Bengaluru, Feb. 10 -- Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday asserted that the Karnataka government has independently halted the proposed Bengaluru Metro fare hike, rejecting claims of any central intervention and stating that the Centre has no legal authority in the matter.

Shivakumar said the decision to stop the fare increase was taken solely by the state government in the interest of commuters.

He directed officials to undertake a fresh review of fare data, stressing that the move was aimed at preventing additional financial burden on daily Metro users.

"The Centre has neither the right nor the legal basis to interfere in the state's fare policies," he said, asserting Karnataka's administrative control over the issue.
