Chennai, June 21 -- Ever since it was established in 1976 as a monument to honour Saint Tamil poet Thirualluvar, who authored the couplet Thirukkural, the Valluvar Kottam stands as one of the iconic and cultural landmark of this teeming megapolis.

It was the key venue and late Chief Minister and DMK Patriarch M Karunanidhi, who was the brain behind in building this sprawling structure to honour the Saint Poet, used to hold the swearing-in ceremonies whenever the DMK came to power by winning the elections.

It was one of the most preferred venues that had hosted innumerable events in its five decade long existence, including government functions, expos, political meets, cultural programmes and other events over the years.
