Chennai, March 2 -- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M.K.Stalin justified his government's handling of the Deepam lighting row at the Tiruparamkundram hillock, saying he had acted strictly in his capacity as Chief Minister and not as a religious leader to safeguard the traditions of the hill temple in Madurai.

In a video message released last night on his 73rd birthday, Mr Stalin said governance decisions must be guided by constitutional responsibility and public interest.

He also emphasised that personal faith should not bow down politics and maintained that the government's actions were aimed at preserving social harmony and following due process and to maintain the temple's traditions.
