Chennai, Dec. 20 -- Noting that passenger safety was its highest priority, the Chennai Division of Southern Railway hasstepped up enforcement against stone pelting on running trains, reiterating its zero-tolerance policy.

This offence is punishable under the Railways Act, 1989 and poses a serious threat to passenger safety and railway property,a Southern Railway release said.

In coordination with the Government Railway Police (GRP), the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has enhanced surveillance,resulting in over 37 cases registered under Secs 153 and 154 of the Railways Act, 1989.

Officials have noted that many incidents involve minors playing near railway tracks, often treating it as a prank.
