Colombo, Nov. 28 -- At least 31 people have died and 14 remain missing after severe floods and landslides swept across Sri Lanka this week, with authorities warning that worsening weather could trigger further disasters.
The central, eastern and south-western districts have borne the heaviest impact, with Badulla the worst hit in terms of loss of life.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said many of the victims were buried alive when rain-soaked mountain slopes collapsed on homes.
Rescue operations involving the military and police are continuing, with boats, helicopters and heavy vehicles deployed to reach stranded communities and search for the missing.
