Lucknow, Aug. 12 -- The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council witnessed heated exchanges between the ruling BJP and opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) over the issue of deteriorating law and order in the state.

The discussion, led by SP members, quickly turned contentious as Deputy Chief Minister and Leader of the House Keshav Prasad Maurya launched a scathing attack on the SP's previous tenure.

Maurya said that since the BJP came to power in 2017, the people of the state finally "breathed a sigh of relief" from what he called a "criminal-infested" SP regime. He accused the SP of harboring criminals, stating, "During SP's tenure, their drawing rooms used to be filled with criminals. There was an atmosphere of fear across UP before 2017."
