Chennai, Jan. 9 -- A deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal continues to move nearly northwestwards, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in an update issued at 8:30 am IST on Jan 9.
The system has been progressing at a speed of around 10 kmph over the past six hours.
As of 8:30 am on Friday, the deep depression was centered near latitude 7.4degN and longitude 83.2degE over the southwest Bay of Bengal. It was located about 160 km east-northeast of Pottuvil, 170 km east-southeast of Batticaloa, 250 km east-southeast of Trincomalee and 270 km east-northeast of Hambantota in Sri Lanka.
The system was also positioned around 540 km southeast of Karaikal and 710 km south-southeast of Chennai.
