Seoul, Aug. 11 -- South Korean military has witnessed a drastic shortage in manpower, reducing by 450,000 due to decline in birth rate - reducing by 20% over the last six years - according to a defence ministry report released by a ruling party lawmaker.



According to BBC, authorities reported the birth rate to be at its lowest, standing at 0.75 babies per woman, leading to a strong shortage in military manpower.



Seoul maintains military conscription of up to 18 months minimum, due to its hostility with its nuclear neighbour, North Korea, thus maintaining a strong military of its own.
