Kochi, Sept. 17 -- Kerala has emerged as the torchbearer of India's maritime renaissance, union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has said, underlining the state's pivotal role in steering the nation towards its goal of becoming a global maritime leader by 2047.

The Minister pointed out that the Vizhinjam International Seaport, operational since 2024 as India's first fully automated transshipment hub, has already handled 1.06 million TEUs and nearly 500 vessels, marking a milestone in India's logistics journey.

He also highlighted the international stature of Cochin Shipyard, which built the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and has now established itself as a global name in shipbuilding and repair.
