Srinagar, Aug. 13 -- A soldier was killed in a gunbattle near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district in the wee hours today, officials said.

The "intense but brief exchange" of fire occurred around at 3:30 am in the Churanda area of the Uri sector.

Officials said the soldier sustained critical injuries during the encounter and later succumbed to injuries. The slain soldier, in his mid-thirties, was identified as Havildar Ankit Kumar, a resident of Bhagalpur Bihar.

Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Army said Havildar Ankit Kumar laid down his life while undertaking operational duty along the Line of Control.
