Chennai, April 23 -- Polling to elect the 234-member 17th Legislative Assembly in Tamil Nadu began at 7.00 AM amid tight security.

An esimated 5.73 crore voters would be exercissing their democratic right, sealin the fate of 4,023 candidates of which 443 were women.

Of the total 5.73 crore electorate, 2.80 crore were men, 2.93 crore women and 7,728 Third Gender.

Of them a total of 1.21 crore are in the 18-29 age group comprising first time and young generation voters (about 14.59 lakh voters), who are expected to be a decisive factor in this battle of attrition in a four cornered contest.
