Hyderabad, July 9 -- Coal production in Telangana's Singareni coal belt came to a grinding halt on Wednesday as workers from both underground and open-cast mines observed a one-day strike as part of a nationwide protest called by the Singareni Workers' Joint Action Committee (JAC).

Demanding the repeal of the Centre's four new labour codes and opposing the privatisation of public sector undertakings, trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, and TBGKS staged protests across mining areas.

Except for emergency staff, most workers participated in the strike, disrupting operations and affecting an estimated six thousand metric tonnes of coal production in the Bhupalpally division alone.
