Singapore, July 2 -- Singapore has begun imposing fines and jail terms on individuals who ride on pedestrian-only paths, in a bid to protect more vulnerable pedestrians such as seniors and children, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a statement.

From July 1, offenders riding bicycles or using motorized and non-motorized personal mobility devices on these restricted paths may face fines of up to 2,000 Singapore dollars (about 1,571 U.S. dollars), imprisonment for up to three months, or both.

The LTA said it would adopt a measured and considered approach when determining whether an offence has occurred. However, it noted that there would be "zero tolerance towards those who speed or ride in a rash and reckless manner on paths." ...
