Belagavi, Dec. 9 -- Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president D K Shivakumar on Tuesday urged the Opposition to target the union government over "policies that have deepened the farmers crisis in the state" instead of staging a mega protest against the state government.

Speaking to reporters at the Belagavi airport ahead of the state assembly's winter session, Shivakumar said the BJP's protest was "misdirected", adding that farmers were suffering due to decisions taken in New Delhi, not Bengaluru. "Farmers are under severe strain because of the Centre's decisions on maize, sugarcane and ethanol. None of the grants due to Karnataka have been released," he said.
