Belagavi, Dec. 11 -- Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday sharply criticised the BJP, branding them as the "fathers of hate speech" while defending the state government's proposed legislation to curb divisive rhetoric.

Speaking to reporters at Suvarna Soudha where he also touched upon the potential hosting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, Shivakumar said, "They are the fathers of hate speech, spreading hate between religions and communities. We are doing all this to save the Constitution."His pointed remark came amid ongoing political tension over the BJP's strong opposition to the proposed hate speech bill.
