Kozhikode, Aug. 24 -- Seven cases of Amoebic Meningoencephalitis also known as Amoebic Meningitis, a rare and often fatal brain infection,have been reported from three districts of North Malabar, raising concern among the public and health authorities in Kerala.

The first confirmed case was reported on August 14, when Microbiology laboratory tests from Kozhikode Medical College hospital (KMCH), identified the disease in Anaya (9) of Annappara near Thamarassery Taluk hospital with fever and vomiting, and later shifted to KMCH. Despite treatment, she died on August 16, becoming the first confirmed fatality in the State due to this infection, in this year.
