Mumbai, March 21 -- Extending gains for the fifth consecutive session on Friday, the BSE Sensex rallied 557.45 pts to close at 76,905.51 following gains in oil and gas, utilities and energy stocks.
Fresh foreign fund inflow too supported the market.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) rose 159.75 pts at 23,350.40.
Though volatility was seen during the day, it finally ended in green only.
Registering a massive gain of 899 on Thursday, the Sensex fell 119 pts at 76,155 in the opening session. During the day, it dropped 253 pts at 76,095.26, the day's low.
In late trade, it erased earlier losses and registered a 693-pt gain at 77,041.94, day's high, before closing at 76,905.51, up 557.45 pts from its previous close.
