Ranjani ShankarPatna, Nov. 25 -- Public health experts have called for an urgent and comprehensive genetic study of lactating mothers and their infants, after traces of uranium contamination was found in lactating mothers in six Bihar districts.
A scientific investigation found traces of Uranium-238 a hazardous radioactive isotope, in all breast milk samples examined.
Dr Dhirendra Narayan Sinha, Chairman of the School of Preventive Oncology, described the findings as "serious and alarming," warning that the presence of Uranium-238 could potentially cause gene mutations or abnormalities in both mothers and children.
"A genetic study is essential to determine whether uranium exposure has led to any aberrations," he told UNI.
