New Delhi, Sept. 26 -- The Supreme Court today upheld the Telangana High Court's order quashing criminal proceedings against Jerusalem Mathai in connection with the 2015 cash-for-vote-scam.
The case pertained to allegations that MLA Elvis Stephenson was offered a bribe to vote in favour of a TDP candidate during the Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, then a TDP leader, is also an accused in the case.
It was argued before the Supreme Court that the High Court had erred by conducting a "mini-trial" at the quashing stage. The FIR, along with alleged audio-video recordings and recovery of bribe amounts, was cited as evidence that a cognisable offence had been made out.
