New Delhi, Sept. 9 -- The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on September 23 the inter-state water-sharing dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka concerning the Pennaiyar river after attempts at negotiation failed.
A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta was informed that the Pennaiyar Water Dispute Tribunal has still not been constituted by the union government.
The court was told that despite multiple rounds of mediation facilitated by the Central government, the negotiation committee earlier set up between the two states had not succeeded in resolving the dispute.
In November 2024, it was reported that efforts at mediation had been attempted with discussions on several occasions but without any breakthrough.
