New Delhi, Nov. 27 -- In a significant order with far-reaching implications for private higher education across India, the Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the union government, all States and union Territories, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to furnish comprehensive details on how private universities in the country were established, regulated and monitored.
A Bench comprising Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Justice N.V. Anjaria said the exercise was necessary in the "larger public interest" to understand the statutory frameworks governing private universities, the benefits granted to them by governments, and the individuals and organisations that control them.
