New Delhi, Sept. 24 -- The Supreme Court today sought an explanation from the Maharashtra government as to why the trial in the 2016 Surajgarh arson case has not commenced so far, even as human rights lawyer Surendra Gadling has spent more than six years in custody.
A bench, comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi was hearing Gadling's bail plea and expressed concern over the prolonged incarceration without trial.
"Why is the trial not going on? This is the main concern. If you keep a person in custody without trial, for how many years?" Justice Maheshwari observed.
