New Delhi, Dec. 1 -- The Supreme Court today asked the union government to take instructions on the possibility of bringing back a heavily pregnant woman and her eight-year-old son who were recently deported to Bangladesh, observing that their case should be viewed "purely on humanitarian grounds".

A Bench, comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, was hearing the union government's petition challenging a Calcutta High Court order that had directed the repatriation of several individuals deported to Bangladesh.

The matter has now been listed for further hearing on December 3.
