Chandigarh, Aug. 13 -- If the Supreme Court can order the release of a prisoner who has completed a 20-year sentence, as seen in the Sukhdev Yadav case, why are Sikh prisoners, who have served far beyond their mandated sentences, still languishing in jails? This was posed by Shiromani Committee member Gurucharan Singh Garewal today.

Highlighting the Supreme Court's recent ruling in the case of Sukhdev Yadav, a convict in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case, he pointed to the prolonged detention of Sikh prisoners. Garewal pointed out that the Supreme Court expressed dismay at the Delhi government and the Sentence Review Board (SRB) for delaying Yadav's release despite him having completed his fixed-term sentence on March 9, 2025.
