New Delhi, Nov. 26 -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the District Hospital in Noida to constitute a Permanent Medical Board to assess whether life-sustaining treatment may be withdrawn for a 32-year-old man who has been in a vegetative state for 12 years after falling from a building.
The direction was issued in accordance with the landmark Common Cause judgment of 2018, which recognised the right to die with dignity and laid down the framework for passive euthanasia.
A bench of Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K.V. Viswanathan passed the order, also relying on the Supreme Court's modified guidelines issued in January 2023 to make advance medical directives and Living Wills more workable.
