New Delhi, Nov. 5 -- The Supreme Court today issued notice in a petition filed by a Tamil Nadu District Judge challenging a Government Order that retrospectively alters the seniority structure in the State's higher judicial service.

The case raises significant questions on whether retrospective amendments can deprive direct recruits of their accrued seniority and promotional rights.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran heard the plea and directed notice to the State of Tamil Nadu and other respondents.
