New Delhi, July 25 -- In a significant move to protect the mental health of students, the Supreme Court today issued comprehensive guidelines mandating systemic reforms across schools, colleges, and coaching centres to prevent student suicides.

A bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, laid down 15 binding directions while deciding a plea by the father of a 17-year-old NEET aspirant who died under suspicious circumstances after falling from her hostel terrace in Visakhapatnam.

The student was enrolled at Aakash Byju's Institute for NEET coaching.

The apex court transferred the investigation of her death to the CBI, citing grave lapses by the local police and institutional authorities.
