New Delhi, Aug. 18 -- The Supreme Court today stepped in to examine the plight of officer cadets who suffer permanent disabilities during training at the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Military Academy (IMA), but are denied ex-servicemen status and long-term benefits.

The Court issued notices to the Union of India, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Social Justice, calling for a policy response.

A Bench comprising Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice R. Mahadevan, while hearing the suo motu case, voiced concern that young aspirants, injured in accidents during rigorous training, are left without proper support.
