New Delhi, Sept. 9 -- The Supreme Court today directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to treat the Aadhaar card as a "12th document" that can be produced as proof of identity for inclusion in the revised electoral roll of Bihar.

The Court clarified that Aadhaar can be submitted as a stand-alone document, similar to the other eleven documents specified by the ECI in its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) notification.

However, the Court emphasised that Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship. It directed the ECI to issue instructions to its field officials regarding the acceptance of Aadhaar cards and permitted them to verify the authenticity of the cards produced by voters.
