New Delhi, Oct. 27 -- In a major relief to lakhs of rural workers in West Bengal, the Supreme Court today directed the union Government to release 100-day work funds to the state for clearing pending dues under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta also upheld the Calcutta High Court's order directing the resumption of the scheme from August 1, 2025.

The apex judiciary dismissed the Centre's plea challenging the High Court order, which had mandated the prospective implementation of MGNREGA in the state after it remained suspended for nearly three years due to alleged financial irregularities.
