New Delhi, Aug. 25 -- The Supreme Court today directed the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an independent inquiry into the functioning of Vantara (Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre) operated by the Reliance Foundation at Jamnagar, Gujarat.
A Bench comprising Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Prasanna B Varale passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate C.R. Jaya Sukin, who levelled several allegations against the activities of the centre.
The Court noted that while the petition contained only allegations without supporting material and ordinarily would not merit consideration, the nature of the accusations required an impartial fact-finding exercise.
