New Delhi, Oct. 8 -- The Supreme Court has acquitted a Maharashtra man, Nilesh Baburao Gitte, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly killing his mother in 2010, holding that the evidence was weak and the alleged motive was not believable.
A Bench comprising Justice K.V. Vishwanathan and Justice K. Vinod Chandran allowed Gitte's appeal against the Bombay High Court's 2013 judgment, which had upheld his conviction.
The High Court had earlier acquitted another accused, Balasaheb Gangadhar Gitte, in the same case.
The Supreme Court noted that the entire case was based on circumstantial evidence and said there were serious gaps in the investigation.
