New Delhi, Oct. 8 -- In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court on Thursday set aside the conviction and death sentence of Dashwanth, who had been accused of the rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl in Mugalivakkam, Chennai, in 2017.
The Court ordered his immediate release, noting that the prosecution had "miserably failed" to establish key circumstances forming the basis of the case.
A Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol, and Sandeep Mehta allowed Dashwanth's appeal and overturned the 2018 Madras High Court judgment that had upheld the Trial Court's conviction and death penalty.
