Mumbai, March 23 -- Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said the episode of some Satara Zilla Parishad members being obstructed from voting in the recent presidential election there was unprecedented in the electoral history of the state and amounted to "the killing of democracy".

Raising the issue during the state Assembly's budget session on Monday, Shinde said the incident has raised serious questions over democratic values. He pointed out that any interference in the voting process undermines the very foundation of a fair electoral system.
