Moscow, July 29 -- Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has castigated the idea of the United States purchasing the Commander Islands from Russia.

Earlier, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Fritz, who serves with the US Army's Security Assistance Command in Estonia, proposed that Washington could consider purchasing the Commander Islands from Russia.



In an article for Breaking Defence, Fritz argued that these islands could be used by the US to monitor potential Chinese submarine activity enroute to the Arctic.

"This is not even worth commenting on, since selling our Motherland is regarded-both legally and ethically- as one of the gravest crimes," Zakharova told Sputnik.
