Berlin, Oct. 19 -- Legendary German composer and saxophonist Klaus Doldinger, whose hauntingly evocative scores for "Das Boot" and "The NeverEnding Story" became milestones in film music, has died at 89, his family confirmed on Wednesday.
Born on May 12, 1936, in Berlin, Doldinger's early training in piano and clarinet soon gave way to a passionate devotion to jazz, a genre introduced to post-war Germany by American GIs and one that symbolised the freedom he yearned for after surviving the oppressive constraints of the Nazi regime.
