Mumbai, July 21 -- Torrential monsoon unleashed havoc across Mumbai and its satellite cities early Monday, with the India Meteorological Department slapping an orange alert over Maharashtra's entire Konkan belt, excluding Palghar.

Sheets of rain driven by fierce winds battered Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts under thick cloud cover, triggering emergency protocols as Santacruz weather station logged 150mm of downpour within hours starting 8:30 am.

IMD Mumbai Director Shubhangi Bhute pinned the deluge on "easterly monsoon winds concentrating over Konkan," while Mantralay authorities blasted SMS alerts to millions across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, warning citizens to avoid non-essential movement for the next 3-4 hours.
