New Delhi, Aug. 8 -- The number of consequential train accidents has plummeted from an alarming 1,711 incidents during 2004-14 (averaging 171 per year) to just 31 in 2024-25, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Parliament today.
In a written reply to questions in Rajya Sabha, Vaishnaw said preliminary data for the current 2025-26 fiscal shows a further reduction to three accidents till June,
Equally remarkable is the decline in accidents per million train kilometres (APMTKM), a critical metric measuring operational safety, which has fallen by 73%, from 0.11 in 2014-15 to a mere 0.03 in 2024-25, the minister said.
