Aizawl, July 14 -- Mizoram's capital Aizawl is set to be connected to India's railway network for the first time, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to inaugurate the Bairabi-Sairang line later this month.

The 51.38-km stretch, built through steep hills, forested terrain and fragile slopes, is being hailed as a game changer for the state's economy. With 48 tunnels, 142 bridges, and a station perched on a ridge outside Aizawl, the line is set to reduce freight costs, improve logistics and strengthen trade routes in the landlocked hill state.

The Prime Minister gave his nod for the inauguration during a meeting with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma in New Delhi today.
