Nagpur, Sept. 1 -- A Public Works Department (PWD) contractor in Nagpur allegedly committed suicide today, unable to cope with mounting financial stress arising from unpaid government dues running into crores of rupees, a senior police official said.
According to the official, the contractor, identified as P V Verma, had been waiting for payments worth Rs 30-40 crore for completed works under various government schemes. The prolonged delay had pushed him into severe financial distress, forcing him to take the extreme step.
When Verma ended his life at his Rajnagar flat, his family was in Hyderabad, the officials said.
Nagpur police have launched an investigation into the contractor's death.
