Punjab village issues eviction order to migrants, instructs to leave within week
Chandigarh, July 12 -- In a move reminiscent of language-based hostilities seen in cities like Mumbai-where people have been physically assaulted for speaking Hindi instead of Marathi-a panchayat in Punjab's Fatehgarh Sahib district has issued a controversial and arguably unconstitutional order that has triggered alarm among civil rights groups.
The village council of Lakhanpur (Garchaan Patti), located in the Khamano block, has directed migrant families to vacate the village within seven days, citing allegations of public nuisance, drug use and threats to law and order.
The order has sparked intense debate over xenophobia, discrimination, and the erosion of constitutional guarantees in rural governance.
