Chandigarh, May 28 -- Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa died at a private hospital in Mohali on Wednesday evening after a prolonged illness, family sources said.

Dhindsa, 89, is survived by his wife, son, and two daughters.

Dhindsa was a senior and experienced leader of Punjab, whose political career started with the Akali Dal and he played an important role in the state and central politics.

Born in April, 1936 in Ubawal, Sangrur, in a farmer family, Dhindsa became active in student politics when he was in college.

Dhindsa served as the Union Minister for Sports and Chemicals and Fertilisers in the third A B Vajpayee ministry from 2000 to 2004.
