Hoshiarpur, Feb. 25 -- A Punjab Police home guard died on Monday after his service rifle accidentally discharged when he was cleaning it while on duty at the warehouse of the Election Office here, where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are stored.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gazalpreet Kaur, who is also the SHO of Sadar Police Station, Hoshiarpur, said preliminary investigation revealed that Home Guard Kamaljit Singh (56) was cleaning his service .303 rifle when the weapon, possibly not set to safety mode, accidentally fired.
The bullet pierced his chin and exited through his head, killing him on the spot.
