New Delhi, Sept. 18 -- A probe has been ordered into the sudden death of Shankar, the lone 29-year-old African elephant at Delhi's National Zoological Park, who collapsed and died in his enclosure last evening.

According to a statement issued by the zoo authorities, Shankar had shown mild symptoms on the morning of September 17, including eating fewer leaves and grasses and passing loose stools.

However, the elephant continued to consume fruits, vegetables, and concentrate normally throughout the day. "Treatment was given by the veterinary team, and the animal was under observation of the animal keeping staff," the statement said.
