Guwahati, Nov. 28 -- A day after the Assam Assembly passed a legislation to prohibit polygamy, the Opposition parties including the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) termed the bill as a political gimmick to polarize voters ahead of the elections.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had tabled the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 on Tuesday in the Assembly which sought to make polygamy a criminal offence with seven to ten years of imprisonment and wanted to ensure a compensation mechanism for the victims.
