Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 30 -- Senior Congress leader and former Opposition leader in Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala on Tuesday alleged that the Sabarimala gold plating theft could not have taken place without political backing, asserting that "big sharks" were involved in the case.

Talking to newspersons here, Chennithala said the incident occurred when Kadakampally Surendran was in charge of Devaswom affairs and questioned claims that such a serious matter could have happened without the minister's knowledge.

"Is it believable that two Devaswom Board presidents alone could carry out such a gold robbery at Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple? This clearly points to political protection," he said.
