Puducherry, March 24 -- The Puducherry Maanila Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (PMMMK) on Tuesday decided to boycott the April 9 Assembly elections as a mark of protest against the continued erosion of democratic principles in the union Territory.

PMMMK Founder-Ppresident Prof.M Ramadass in a release here said grassroot democracy in Puducherry has been systematically undermined.

Elections to local bodies-the third tier of governance-have not been conducted since 2011. For 14 years, successive governments have denied the people their constitutional right to elect representatives at the panchayat and municipal levels,he said, adding, despite sustained protests and agitations by the PMMMK, no action was taken.
