New Delhi, May 6 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Friedrich Merz, Germany's conservative leader, who was elected German Chancellor, and said he looks forward to working together to strengthen the bilateral partnership.

In a post on X, the PM said:

"Heartiest congratulations to @_FriedrichMerz on assuming office as the Federal Chancellor of Germany.

"I look forward to working together to further cement the India-Germany Strategic Partnership."

Earlier, Merz was elected as the country's 10th Chancellor by parliament on Tuesday in a second round of voting, after suffering a shock defeat in the first attempt.

In the second round, Merz secured 325 votes, just over the needed 316 votes.
