New Delhi, Dec. 5 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday broached the issue of Indian nationals recruited into the Russian army and being made to fight on the Ukraine war front, during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin here, and urged for their early release.

This comes as some of the kin of the around 44 Indians reported to be serving in the Russian army have been protesting, seeking the government's intervention to bring back their loved ones.

"This issue of the recruitment of Indian citizens into the Russian armed forces was broached by PM Modi," Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said during a special briefing on the state visit of President Putin.
