Siliguri, Oct. 5 -- The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) today said that they have recovered at least 11 dead bodies from various places in the Darjeeling hills and plains, who were swept away after heavy rains and landslides battered the entire eastern Himalayan belt severing links to the hills and neighbouring Sikkim with the rest of the country.

Unconfirmed sources put the toll to 17, mostly in Mirik and Sukhiapokhri. The railway connectivities in north Bengal were severely affected after the tracks inundated forcing the NFR to either cancel or rerouted elsewhere.

The visiting tourists have been asked to stay in the hotels and not to venture out immediately.
